Maps don’t do the walking—but they do help you find your way.
Jul 10, 2025
Personal development can feel disorientating at times.
Like wandering through unfamiliar terrain without knowing which way to turn.
That’s where maps come in.
A good map can’t walk the path for you—
but it can show you where you are.
It can help you see patterns, name the terrain,
and understand what’s unfolding.
It can make the invisible feel more visible.
And that matters.
Because when you understand the stage you're at,
you can stop blaming yourself for not being further ahead.
You can stop comparing your pace to others’.
You can start walking with more self-compassion, more clarity, more choice.
But here’s the thing:
Maps can’t replace experience.
They can point the way, but they can’t prepare you for what it will feel like to actually walk it.
To meet the weather.
To carry what’s yours.
To let go of what no longer fits.
Maps give structure.
Walking gives wisdom.
Both matter.
In my work, I’ve found that having a developmental map—a way of making sense of where you are—is one of the most powerful tools for growth.
But only if it’s held lightly.
With space for the path to unfold in its own time.
So if you’ve been feeling lost, stuck, or unsure—
Maybe you don’t need to push harder.
Maybe you just need a better map, and the courage to keep walking.
With love,
Debbie
